We recently headed back to The Wave near Bristol for another family adventure, and this time it was all about surfing.
George and William had visited before for a Play in the Bay session and absolutely loved it. They spent hours climbing, splashing, and exploring the water-based play area, so when the opportunity came up to try a surf lesson, they were more than ready to return.
As first-time surfers, William definitely had a few nerves before we arrived. Watching the surfers gliding across the waves looked impressive, but we weren't sure how quickly they would pick it up. Thankfully, The Wave's friendly instructors put everyone at ease from the very beginning.
After getting kitted out in wetsuits and listening carefully to the safety briefing, it was time to head into the water. The instructors started with the basics, teaching the boys how to position themselves on the board, paddle correctly, and most importantly, how to pop up into a standing position.
The first few attempts involved plenty of splashes, tumbles, and laughter. Learning to surf is definitely harder than it looks! But with lots of encouragement and expert coaching, both George and William soon began to find their confidence.
The highlight of the session came when they both managed to stand up on their boards. The excitement on William's face in particular, as he rode a wave for the first time was fantastic. I could tell how proud of himself he was. It might only have been for a few seconds, but those moments felt like huge achievements and made all the practice worthwhile.
What we loved most about The Wave was how accessible it made surfing feel. The controlled environment creates ideal conditions for beginners, allowing them to focus on learning new skills without the unpredictability of the sea. The instructors were patient, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping everyone progress, regardless of age or experience.
By the end of the lesson, the boys were tired, soaked, and already asking when they could come back. That's usually the sign of a successful day out.
If you're looking for an exciting family activity or have children keen to try surfing for the first time, we'd highly recommend a visit to The Wave. Whether you're enjoying Play in the Bay, learning to surf, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, it's a brilliant place to spend a day making memories.
For George and William, their first surf lesson was a huge success. They conquered their nerves, stood up on their boards, and discovered a new sport they can't wait to try again. We have a feeling this won't be their last visit to The Wave.
