The Legend of St Mawes :
Six Out Of Time.
A magical Cornish mystery adventure by Brett Orchard
Some places feel like they are waiting for a story.
For Brett, Vikki, George, William and Lola, St Mawes has always been one of those places.
The harbour. The castle. The ferry across the water. The cosy glow of The Rising Sun. The sound of waves curling over Black Rock. The feeling that every lane, every old wall and every stormy evening might be hiding something from another time.
The Legend of St Mawes takes that real family love for the village and turns it into a sweeping children’s mystery adventure full of friendship, courage, time, storms, secrets and the kind of magic that only seems possible by the sea.
This is not just a story set in St Mawes.
It is a story born from St Mawes.
A village we feel deeply at home in..
St Mawes is more than a backdrop to this book. It is the heart of it.
The story begins with a family arriving back in the village for the Easter holidays, returning to a place that feels familiar, loved and quietly full of promise. George and William are back in one of their favourite places, Lola is ready for adventure, and The Rising Sun once again becomes the warm harbour-side home at the centre of everything.
But St Mawes is not simply cosy in this story.
It is watchful.
It is old.
It is full of echoes.
From the harbour to the castle, from the ferry to the stormy waters around Black Rock, the village becomes a living part of the adventure, a place where the past is closer than anyone realises.
The story
When George, William, Chloe, Amber and Jess reunite in St Mawes for the Easter holidays, it should be the perfect Cornish adventure: ferry trips, harbour walks, hot chocolates, stormy skies, secret caves, old bookshops and days spent exploring together.
Then George finds an old mystery story.
A story about St Mawes.
A story about a haunted cave.
A story about a storm from long ago.
At first, it seems like just an old book.
But as the weather turns, the sea rises and the village begins to feel strangely alive, the children discover that some stories do not stay safely on the page.
There are names from the past.
A vanished ship.
A storm that should have ended nearly a century ago.
And a legend that still has one final secret to reveal.
To solve it, the six friends must follow the clues through St Mawes, Mevagissey, Falmouth, the ferry crossing, the castle, the shoreline and the shadows of history itself.
But time is not as fixed as they thought.
And some legends are carried on the tide.
A big-hearted adventure for readers aged 7–12
The Legend of St Mawes is written for children who love proper adventure stories, the kind with real places, brave friends, mysterious clues, old secrets, stormy nights and a sense that something extraordinary could happen just around the corner.
It is full of humour, warmth and family life, but it also has a larger, more emotional heart: friendship, bravery, loyalty, loss, memory and the importance of doing the right thing when it really matters.
Readers who enjoy coastal mysteries, time-slip adventures, classic children’s stories, Cornish legends, friendship adventures and stories set in real places will feel immediately at home.
Why St Mawes matters to the book
St Mawes gives the story its soul.
The village’s harbour, castle, ferry, waterfront, narrow streets and stormy coastline create the atmosphere that runs through the whole book. The Rising Sun gives the adventure its warm centre. The ferry opens the story out across the water. Black Rock adds danger. The old stories of storms, caves and the sea give the mystery its pull.
This is the magic of St Mawes: it can feel peaceful and adventurous at the same time.
A family holiday can become a mystery.
A ferry ride can become a clue.
A storm can become a doorway.
An old legend can suddenly feel real.
That is why this book belongs here.

It is a lovely book of just the kind that I loved as a boy. I was prompted to read because of my acquaintance with Brett and his beautiful family through their amusing videos posted on social media documenting their life togethers. These boys are lucky to have such wonderful parents. And it is always obvious how much Brett loves his boys who he has written into this book as leading characters along with Lola their adorable dog. The story reads like a wonderful campfire tale entertaining for all ages with the suspense that compels you to stay up past bedtime to see how it ends. I loved the picture it paints of this part of Cornwall, a corner of England I was before unfamiliar with. Look forward to sharing this with the young readers in my family.

“The 3rd book had a cool plot twist. Glad to have escaped to Spain, and the descriptive words used by the author enhance the feeling of being a direct part of the adventure..”

"I actually really liked this book, despite it being aimed at teenagers. It's basically the Famous Five in a Time Shift genre, with more character development than the previous two books."
