There’s something about October that makes me want to embrace all things autumnal, wrap up warm and get out and about discovering something a little different. So, on Friday 9th October, we headed to Avon Valley Pumpkin Patch Nights for an evening filled with pumpkins, fairground fun, delicious treats and a generous sprinkling of Halloween magic.

As regular readers of Days Like This will know, we love finding things to do that create memories, whether that’s exploring somewhere new, enjoying a seasonal event or simply making the most of an ordinary Friday evening. And this visit certainly gave us plenty to talk about!

A Pumpkin Lover’s Paradise

You really can’t have a pumpkin-themed event without pumpkins, and Avon Valley certainly delivered on that front!

The sheer multitude of pumpkins was impressive, with a wonderful variety of shapes, sizes and colours. From the familiar classic orange pumpkins to different varieties that make you stop and take a closer look, there was no shortage of autumn inspiration.

Whether you’re a serious pumpkin enthusiast, looking for the perfect specimen to carve into a spooky Halloween masterpiece, or simply love a good autumn photograph, there was plenty to admire.

One thing worth knowing is that you can also pick your own pumpkin from the fields during the daytime. I imagine this is a lovely activity for families, particularly children who want to find their very own pumpkin to take home. There’s something much more satisfying about choosing one straight from the field rather than simply picking one up at the supermarket!

Of course, our visit was for Pumpkin Patch Nights, which gives the whole experience a different feel, with the darker evenings adding to the Halloween atmosphere.

Games, Giggles and the Elusive Monkey!

Now, I’m always happy to have a go at a game or two, particularly when there’s a prize involved. Put me in front of a fairground-style game and, apparently, all common sense goes out of the window!

There were several games to try, including Pumpkin Slingshot, Pumpkin Paintball, Apple Cannon and Bottle Smash. Each offered its own challenge, and naturally, we had to give them a go.

There’s something about these games that makes you believe that this will be the one you finally conquer. You watch someone else have a go, decide it looks perfectly achievable, hand over your money and suddenly discover that winning is rather more difficult than it first appeared!

Our particular mission was to win ourselves a monkey. Sadly, despite our best efforts, the monkey remained firmly out of reach.

I’d like to blame the games, the equipment or perhaps a particularly unfortunate run of luck, but the truth is that we simply didn't manage to win one. Never mind! We may have gone home without a new cuddly companion, but at least we had plenty of laughs trying.

If you enjoy a bit of friendly competition, these games are a great way to add some extra fun to your visit. Just be warned: you might arrive thinking you'll have one go and end up determined to redeem yourself!

Fairground Fun for Everyone

As well as the games, there were fairground attractions to enjoy, including inflatable slides and bumper cars.

These are the sorts of attractions that bring a lively, family-friendly atmosphere to an event like this. The inflatable slides looked like a great way to burn off some energy, while bumper cars are always good for a bit of harmless chaos.

It's lovely to see an event that offers more than just one main attraction. You can wander among the pumpkins, try your luck at the games, enjoy the fairground rides and then take a break with something delicious to eat or drink.

There’s plenty to keep people entertained, whether you're visiting with children, meeting friends or simply looking for a different way to spend an autumn evening.

Ultimate Hot Chocolate and Delicious Doughnuts

Of course, no autumn evening would be complete without something comforting to eat and drink, and this is where Avon Valley really tempted us!

First up was an ultimate hot chocolate topped with cream and marshmallows. It was absolutely delicious and just what I needed while sitting back and watching the entertainment.

There's something about a hot chocolate on a chilly October evening that feels like the ultimate seasonal treat. Add a generous helping of cream and marshmallows, and I'm very easily persuaded!

And then there were the freshly cooked doughnuts.

Now, I'm not sure who first decided that freshly cooked doughnuts were the perfect companion to a pumpkin patch, but whoever it was deserves a round of applause. They looked far too good to ignore, and naturally, we didn't.

I'm pleased to report that they tasted every bit as good as they looked. Warm, freshly cooked doughnuts are one of those treats that are almost impossible to resist, particularly when you can enjoy them straight away.

Sometimes, the simplest pleasures really are the best.

Toasting Marshmallows and Making S'mores

Just when I thought we'd ticked off enough treats for one evening, there was another tempting option: S'mores kits, where we could toast our own marshmallows.

There's something wonderfully nostalgic about toasting marshmallows over a flame. It brings back memories of campfires, outdoor adventures and those little moments when everyone gathers around to see whose marshmallow will turn perfectly golden and whose will end up a little more charred than intended!

With a S'mores kit, you get to toast your own marshmallows and create that delicious combination of gooey sweetness and chocolatey goodness.

It's an activity that's as much about the experience as the food itself. You take your time, enjoy the moment and have a bit of fun along the way.

Between the hot chocolate, doughnuts and toasted marshmallows, I think it's fair to say that we certainly didn't go hungry!

Entertainment to Enjoy Along the Way

One of the nice things about Pumpkin Patch Nights is that there is entertainment to enjoy alongside the other activities.

We were able to sit back with our hot chocolate and watch the entertainment, which made a welcome change from rushing around trying to win games or deciding what to try next.

It’s a lovely balance: you can be as active as you like, having a go at the games and exploring the attractions, or take a little time out to relax, enjoy a treat and soak up the atmosphere.

For me, that's what makes an evening like this enjoyable. It's not just about ticking off a list of activities; it's about having the freedom to do a bit of everything and enjoying the experience at your own pace.

Is Avon Valley Pumpkin Patch Nights Worth Visiting?

I think Avon Valley Pumpkin Patch Nights is a great option if you're looking for something seasonal to do in the Bristol area during October.

There are pumpkins galore, games to test your skills, fairground attractions, entertainment and plenty of tempting food and drink. Whether you fancy challenging yourself at Pumpkin Slingshot, taking a ride on the bumper cars, warming up with an indulgent hot chocolate or toasting marshmallows to make your own S'mores, there's plenty to fill an evening.

And if you prefer a daytime visit, the opportunity to pick your own pumpkin straight from the fields is another reason to put Avon Valley on your autumn to-do list.

My advice? Go with an appetite, take part in the games, enjoy the entertainment and don't forget to leave room for the doughnuts!

As for us, we may not have won ourselves a monkey, but we enjoyed a lovely evening full of autumn treats, games and laughter. Perhaps next time we'll finally master Bottle Smash or get lucky with the Apple Cannon.

Or perhaps we'll just concentrate on the hot chocolate and doughnuts. I know which option sounds the most achievable!

Making the Most of Days Like This

One of the things I love most about writing Days Like This is discovering experiences that encourage us to get out, try something new and make memories together.

Life can get busy, and it's easy to fall into the routine of work, home and all the usual everyday commitments. But sometimes, a simple evening out is all it takes to break that routine and give you something different to look forward to.

Avon Valley Pumpkin Patch Nights was a lovely way to embrace the autumn season, and if you're looking for a Halloween-themed evening with plenty of variety, it's certainly worth considering.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need another hot chocolate!
